«Prof. Gianfranco Angelino» Best Poster Award on the “ORC 2021Conference - 6th International Seminar on ORC Power Systems”

The research work presented by Efstrations Varvagiannis (PhD Candidate of the School of Mech. Eng. NTUA) was awarded as the best poster in the above seminar, which was held on 11th-13th October 2021. The study resulted from the interdisciplinary co-operation of the Laboratory of Steam Boilers and Thermal Plants of the School of Mechanical Engineering-NTUA and the laboratory of Process Control and Informatics of the School of Chemical Engineering-NTUA.

ORC 2021 Best Poster Award

This reseach work focuses on the application of advanced control techniques following the general Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology on an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) unit designed for Waste Heat Recovery from a marine auxiliary I.C.E. The controller was developed to allow the continuous and safe operation of the ORC unit, aiming simultaneously at the real time maximization of the net produced electrical power, while it was tested and compared to conventional PID controllers on a dynamic simulation environment using specially developed dynamic models for the ORC components.

Congratulations to the scientific team:

School of Mechanical Engineering: Prof. Karellas Sotirios, Varvaginannis Efstratios (PhD Candidate),  Tryfon C. Roumpedakis (PhD Candidtate), Platon Pallis (post Doc Researcher).

School of Chemical Engineering, NTUA: Prof. Sarimveis Haralambos, Kalogeropoulos Ioannis (PhD Candidate).
